Because of the problem with citrus greening in Florida citrus crops, the University of Florida has researched and provided information to farmers to replace citrus crops that are failing due to citrus greening with Barbados (or called Acerola) cherry. This seems like a very hardy plant and from personal experience and animals and birds in Southwest Florida do not strip the fruit from the plant like raccoons sometimes do in citrus trees.
It will be interesting to see the conversion from the Sunshine State (as Florida is marketed) being represented by an orange to a Barbados cherry.
The amount of vitamin c in Barbados Cherry far exceeds citrus fruits.
