This summer we have been grafting a lot of Carambola here at ECHO NARIC and there is more grafting to come as the weather cools down a little bit before the cold hits and Carambola slows down. When we have ideal budwood and nice young rootstock we have decent success cleft grafting Carambola. Otherwise side veneer is our most used grafting method for Carambola. We have been experimenting with budding Carambola, but have not had very good success this season.
Ideal budwood looks like little rolled oats tucked at the leaf petioles along a hardened off branch.
These photos show bad budwood that is either too far pushed or too young and small still.
