Before the pandemic thousands of small farmers in SSA countries had sown Jack beans to fertilise their depleted soil.
Then came flooding and locust attacks but the Jack beans were mostly unaffected.
Later when the pandemic started food was, and still is, running short.
However it was discovered that Jack bean plants could provide nourishment only 3 weeks after sowing!
Although the mature beans require careful cooking no one has yet complained of problems in eating the leaves and pods of the plant,
For many it is now their only food!
