Plant material/germplasm in Yucatan peninsula

Hi Everyone!

I am looking for additional plant material of specific species and/or varieties as I’m is working with others to establish a food forest and agricultural training site in Campeche state in the Yucatan peninsula. I’m busy planting trees that I’ve been able to source, but I’m still looking for more local germplasm resources. If you or anyone you know may have plant propagation material to share (especially the species below), please reply here!

  • Longevity Spinach (Gynura procumbens)
  • Breadfruit Trees (Artocarpus altilis) - have networked already with Trees that Feed
  • Okinawa Spinach (Gynura biocolor)
  • Cranberry Hibiscus - looking for established plants or seeds (Hibiscus acetosella)
  • African yam (Dioscorea spp. ideally a rotundata subsp.)
  • Taro/Dasheen/Malanga (Colocasia esculenta)

Although not in the Yucatán, a place you may try to visit is Las Canadas Permaculture Institute in Mexico. They host a large germplasm collection that is always expanding. The director Ricardo visited our farm for a germplasm collection trip and I believe may have even gathered an item or two from your list such as Gynura spp and Dioscorea rotundata. I would wager to say if Ricardo doesn’t have it or doesn’t know where to get it, it may not be in Mexico!

I can’t help with any of those unfortunately, but it sounds like a fantastic project. Building a food forest with locally adapted plants makes a lot of sense in the long run. You might also have some luck asking in local gardening or permaculture groups, since people often have cuttings or tubers they’re happy to share. Hope you find everything you’re looking for!
