There is a big problem here in the Philippines of sourcing good seeds/seedlings for those of us who want to use underutilized crops for food security.
Online markets have many people who import and repackage seeds with bad germination.
There are also laws which prohibit importation via mail or carry-on without proper certification.
There are plants like Queensland arrowroot that has a nice tuber that I can’t source. Plenty of canna edulis/indica here which are ornamental.
If you know of good sources of plants, or seed exchange in the Philippines please share.

@Keith_Mikkelson do you know how and where Brother Galen could safely source plant material?

Vietnam is a huge epicenter of production of Canna edulis. In fact, I believe that now Vietnam outproduces any of the South American countries where this crop is native. In Florida I have found that it is common amongst Vietnamese immigrants to cultivate this crop. If memory serves me right, the literature points to that the Vietnamese form is a triploid population with limited/no sexual reproduction ability therefore the genetic diversity is very low in the country compared to South America where this species is introgressed heavily with other Canna spp and shows generally high diversity. My observation from growing out material from a few different Vietnamese sources is that it all seems to be the same or very similar cultivars. By the way, the Vietnamese canna is a very good tasting and easy to grow root crop.
If you have access to any Vietnamese immigrants in the Phillippines that would be a likely way to find some. If you ever travel to Florida, I can gladly share this crop with you.
Thanks for that info Josh!
Very few Vietnamese here. But I will keep a lookout to see if I can find one. Their diet is much more healthy that the people here. I hear they make noodles out of canna.
Are the tubers as big as Queensland arrowroot?
Blessings

Here is what the Vietnamese variety looks like. We also grow “Baldwins” which is larger, but the eating quality of the Vietnamese variety is much higher.
Nice!
Tropical potato alternative.
