Using Human Urine

Sometime back there was a discussion on the use of human urine in farming. I looked but cannot find that conversation. One of the participants spoke about how urine was collected and used at Echo farm in Florida. It seems to me that before using it, it is stored and maybe fermented. I would be interested in that information.

We have been using ours directly. And that’s worked well for years but now we’re looking at injecting it into our drip irrigation system for labor saving purposes. That would afford us the opportunity to store it and ferment… if there is advantages to doing so.

Hey Glen!

Perhaps what you’re remembering is this post from @Elliott_Toevs? Composting Toilet At ECHO - #2 by ssnyder

I know for a fact that urine kept in a container for a couple of days will definitely increase the Nh3, ammonia in the container.

Using human urine is very good and I was advised by a former and retired agriculture teacher that to use it more effective, it shouldn’t be added in any substance.

Abdu, thank you for your comment. It is interesting but not sure I totally understand. Can you say more about “it shouldn’t be added in any substance.” Please clarify.

Thank you for your response and interest in my comment! Allow me to elaborate on what I meant by “it shouldn’t be added in any substance.” This refers to the practice of using human urine as a natural fertilizer without mixing it with any additional chemicals or substances, such as lime or other additives.

The retired agriculture teacher who advised me explained that the effectiveness of human urine is maximized when it is left to decompose naturally, without interference from other substances. This method allows the urine to break down and mature into a nutrient-rich fertilizer while avoiding potential issues like larvae development or chemical interactions that might alter its natural properties.

I hope this clears up any confusion, and I’m happy to discuss further or answer additional questions if needed!

Thank you Abdu for clarifying and also for explaining the rational. Very helpful and appreciated. Glen
