We’ve had pretty good success with water rooting many of our cuttings here in Florida. In particular plants in the Lamiacea family (mints, basils, etc…). Other network members have shared that they have had success with plants in the Convolvulacea family (sweet potatoes, Kangkung, etc…), Verbenaceae family (Lippia species), as well as Malvaceae family (Cranberry hibiscus, roselle, etc…).
The pictures below are of African Tree Basil (Ocimum kilimandscharicum). We wound the bottom half inch by lightly scraping it before placing it in the water. We have also found it to be important to strip the bottom leaves so that there are no leaves sitting in the water and rotting. Our cuttings will root out in 10-14 days and be ready for planting out.
Do you have any particular successes with water rooting plants?
Do you do additional wounding to the stems before you place them in the water?
